Out And About: Holidays In Cornwall

England’s south west coast is one of the UK’s most popular spots for tourism and every year millions spend their holidays in Cornwall. There are many reasons so many are drawn to England’s most westerly county, one of them being the clement climate. But apart from the weather, the landscape and activities that can be practiced here are also a huge draw.

Cornwall has the longest coastline in the whole of the English mainland. Or rather coastlines, as it’s bordered by three seas, the Atlantic Ocean, Celtic Sea and English Channel. Each coast has its own features and there are hundreds of beaches, some sandy, some made of pebbles, to be found along its great length.

The Atlantic coast is on the north and is a very popular place for surfing. In fact, all coasts are good for water sports, including sailing, scuba diving and windsurfing. There are many activities to do on dry land also, such as hiking, horse riding and cycling along the extensive network of trails. By the coast and inland.

The county is home to abundant species of wildlife and many can be seen when out and about on the county’s many nature trails. Cornwall’s slim shape means that the sea is always just a stone’s throw away, wherever you are in the county. And the sea has played a major part in the county’s histories as well as modern day life.
The sea has also led to many local tales of pirates, smugglers and wreckers. Some of them true, others are works of fiction like Daphne du Maurier’s Jamaica Inn. Some museums have exhibitions on these subjects as well as other local history. Artists also flock to this part of the UK and there are many places to see their work around the county’s galleries.

Small fishing villages are a feature of the coastal parts and some areas are renowned for their seafood. Other local culinary delights to be enjoyed on holidays in Cornwall include the Cornish pasty, an individual pie. The traditional recipe is packed with beef, onions and root vegetables and these days some recipes are also suitable for vegetarians.
