Skiing Holidays – The Places To Go

There is some dissent as to the best places in the world to ski so only a sample can be offered here. Some areas of the world show up on all the best of the best lists. And what’s a great place to ski without a vibrant nightlife and fun things to do in the surrounding area?

Courchevel, France – has the reputation of being the world’s best ski resort and claims to be the largest. It is located within the Three Valleys and there are three villages in Courchevel. Courchevel 1850, is the location of four gourmet restaurants, oodles of boutiques, and also hosts a ski-jumping area and an Olympic skating rink. Don’t forget the night tobogganing and ice climbing.

Chamonix Mont-Blanc, France – is the home of one of the longest ski trails in Europe, the Valle Blanche (22 km). It is the second highest peak in Europe and the highest peak in the Alps. It was the host of the Winter Olympic games in 1924. Chamonix offers backcountry skiing, hang gliding and ice climbing on glaciers as well as all sorts of apres ski activities. Some consider Chamonix to be the World’s Best Ski Resort.

Cortina, Italy – host of the 1956 Olympics, is one of Italy’s most popular and extreme resorts. It’s located in the eastern Dolomites. The central village hosts 52 lifts and 132 km of groomed runs. Holiday travelers can also buy a pass that will give them access to 50 other area resorts. Visit the Cortina Adrenaline sledding for bobsledding, snow rafting and tobogganing.

Whistler, Blackcomb, British Columbia – voted by North Americans to be “The Best North American Ski Resort”, Whistler is certainly one of America’s best and largest resorts. It has many apres ski offerings including cafes, shops and over 100 restaurants. It is known for its 1.6 km vertical drop, the largest in North America. Skiers will enjoy the expert terrains, helicopter skiing, glaciers and wide alpine bowls.

Mont-Tremblant, Quebec – offers hundreds of trails, many terrain parks and off-piste skiing. It is also only an hour from Mont-Tremblant to Montreal. It is located in the Laurentian Mountains and has a European style village. There are cobblestoned streets, pubs galore, creperies and marvelous shopping opportunities.

Aspen, Colorado – offers a chance to ski with the rich and famous. Known for the razzle dazzle of its night life, come for some of the finest skiing in North America. Every skier will find a level of terrain that is suitable to their level of expertise. It can be a bit expensive but it’s worth it.

Squaw Valley, California – was the host of the 1960 Winter Olympics. World class slopes and terrain await you. Couple these with the mild California weather and the breath-taking views of Lake Tahoe and you have a holiday to remember.

Going On A Christmas Ski Vacation?

So the holidays have arrived and you have decided to take your family on a seasonal Christmas skiing vacation. Before you get your boots on, there are a few steps you need to take in order to have a smooth, problem free, relaxing vacation.

Location – Depending on how long you want your vacation to be, there are a huge number of locations around the world that can cater for family skiing vacations. Maybe you just want a week away in North America, or you want to spend Christmas and New Year on the slopes in Asia, or even in the south of France. What will truly limit your choices is your budget.

Accommodation – After you have decided where in the world you want to go, you must now decide what kind of accommodation you want to stay in. Do you like nightlife, close proximity to restaurants and bars and easier access to transport links? If so, accommodation in the center of town is your best bet. If you would prefer a calmer, more relaxed atmosphere where you are closer to nature and enjoy only the company of wildlife as opposed to other holidaymakers, then a chalet on the edge of town would be ideal.

Transportation – So, you know where and when, now you need to research how. Specifically, how will you get there? Do you have enough room in your budget to fly? If you do, how will you transfer from the airport to your booked accommodation? Will you need to rent a car or is there a suitable public transport link? How will you travel to and from the powder everyday? You might, however, get lucky and be within walking distance of the piste, though not without your budget taking a bit hit!

Clothing – It is especially important for you to budget for ski clothing for your family. Hiring ski jackets, boots and skis can cost an arm and a leg, and hiring the wrong size can be dangerous. Research on the internet before you arrive as to how much it will possibly costs, and ask either at your hotel or the proprietors of your bungalow as to where and how much renting clothing will cost. Always remember to choose clothing that is bright and keeps you warm. Due to the dangers that are prevalent when skiing, it is vital that you take every precaution in this department, especially with young children.

Equipment – Ok, so you ski often; you have your own skis, goggles and boots, but are they suitable? Are they damaged? Do they still fit? What do you have? What will you need to hire? Who in your family will be skiing and who snowboarding? Depending on what you and your family want to do, different equipment will be needed for different activities.

Skiing In The Pyrenees

The Pyrenees is not the first place anyone thinks of when they are thinking about their next skiing vacation, more often it is the Alps that gets the first consideration whether that is France, Austria, Italy or Germany. But boy, we may have had some snow but it’s certainly not raining Euro’s so there may be a few people out there who are interested in a cost effective way to go skiing where the prices are a little more reasonable.

Most people know about Andorra and the fact that it is one of the cheapest places to ski, helped by a tax free economy there are some great deals to be had and actually two of the main resorts there, Casa de la Pasa and Soldeu are only about 1/2 an hour or so from the resorts I am going to talk about here, Monts d’Olmes and Ax Les Thermes both of which lie in the French Pyrenees about an hour and a half south of Toulouse. So if you did fancy an excursion into Andorra from here, as long as you are prepared and have some transport its definitely not out of the question.

Located where they are, there are plenty of options for getting to both resorts, Monts d’Olmes and Ax Les Thermes, including flying into Toulouse or Carcassonne, getting rail travel or a bus and that’s not to mention the driving option, hire car or otherwise.
It has to be said that Monts d’Olmes is not that well known and tends to be used by the locals rather than the ski package tour operators, but it’s not a bad little resort and would be great as a family skiing location where there are a range of skill levels from beginner to intermediate. If you are a serious advanced skier or snowboarder then I would say with only 2 black runs and as many greens as reds then this would not be the place for you. But for beginners and intermediates, or families looking for a place where it is relatively easy to keep in touch with one another then it’s worth consideration.

The resort is at a fairly low altitude so there is a need to check the snow forecasts and conditions and to have a contingency plan if the snow does get a bit sparse, it can also be a bit tricky on the mountain roads if a snow storm comes in so it is a good idea to be prepared with an appropriate vehicle, snow chains or by using the bus service to get there, all these options are easily accommodated at varying levels of cost.

The first contingency plan has got to be Ax Les Thermes which is just down the road from Foix on the way to Andorra, it is a much larger resort and has 28 runs (7 more than Monts d’Olmes) and approximately 80 km’s of pisted slopes. It is also slightly higher by about 400m, but this can make all the difference in terms of snow consistency. Another serious benefit of Ax Les Thermes is that it can be accessed from the main road to Andorra via a gondola straight out of the town avoiding the need for driving up and down a mountain road, although that option is there if you want to take it.

The runs at Ax Les Thermes are much longer and provide a better mix for the advanced level winter sports enthusiast with 5 blacks and 10 reds to select from, also with a further 8 blues and 5 greens this resort can cater for all levels of skiing ability and is a good place for beginners and intermediates as well. I suspect that the boarders would enjoy the snowpark in the Saquet sector which is one of the 3 sectors that make up the Ax 3 Domaines skiing resort, the other 2 are Bonascre and Campels.

Both resorts are enjoying the great snow that arrived in November 08 and Ax Les Thermes in particular has had all it’s slopes and lifts open since the beginning of December, Ax Les Thermes has a good mix of gondolas, chairs and draglifts which means if you really want to you can save all your energy for the skiing and still get the degree of difficulty you are looking for. Monts d’Olmes on the other hand has only one chairlift and the rest of the lifts are of the drag variety, that said the chair takes you almost to the top so you can get a good run all the way to the bottom via blues and reds back to the chair.

Ski passes can be bought from increments of 1/2 days up to several days and you should obviously check out the tarriffs for the best deals, there are special family days (1/2 days excluded) and student passes are available at reduced cost. Ski equipment, snowboarding equipment and toboggons are all available for hire at reasonable cost and in the case of Ax Les Thermes you can get your equipment either in town or you can wait until you get up to Bonascre where the first of the slopes is available.

For apres ski, Ax Les Thermes has a lot to offer, being a spa town with hot springs it is just as well visited in the summer as it is in the winter and so there are plenty of facilities on offer including shops, bars, restaurants and cafes. You could probably get a hot tub somewhere as well if you wanted, I have never actually done that but it is a spa town so I am sure there will be facilities somewhere in the town.

I hope you have found this review useful and that it has given you a flavor for a couple of my local ski resorts in the Pyrenees, I have skied in a few different places and countries, including Austria, Italy, Bulgaria, Germany and Canada but I can honestly say that I have enjoyed my skiing here as much as anywhere else, obviously there will be personal favorites but as far as I am concerned as long as you look for the positive and don’t get too hung up over minor irritations you can enjoy any resort.

You can get further information and details on skiing in the Pyrenees on my website Skiing and Snowboarding in the Pyrenees and if you need some help with finding flights and travel information to Europe you can visit my travel advice page on French Travel Advice which has some very useful information for France and Europe generally, whether you are flying, driving or looking to go by rail.

Tips On How To Choose Last Minute Holidays

If you are looking to get off on a last-minute holiday then you will certainly need to be flexible with your time. However, often you will be able to save a great deal of money on last minute holidays, but before you book up your trip, consider some of the following things.

It is first important for you to figure out a specific budget that you are going to work with. If you fail to design a specific budget then you may well end up spending a lot more than you might want. Figure out the cost of the entire holiday, including flights, accommodation, and other necessary costs, and then stick with your budget.

Next you need to figure out where exactly you want to go. If you have a specific destination in mind then it will be a lot more simple for you to find something suitable. If you are not so sure where you want to go but have more of a general idea of the ideal destination then this will take a little bit longer.

Work out the sort of trip that you want to go on and what sort of package you want. Do you want to go on an all-inclusive holiday? Or would you simply prefer a self catered holiday? Maybe you would like to design the trip yourself? Certainly, each one of these will have its own benefits and so you need to work out what is best to you and your budget.

It is certainly important that you to compare offers in order to find the best deal. There are all sorts of different comparison websites that have been setup to allow people to do this and therefore you should go to the last-minute section of any comparison website to find what sort of options are available.

Remember that most last-minute holidays that you purchase are going to be all-inclusives. All-inclusive holidays are usually the best way to save money because they will combine everything you will need on the trip into a single package. In addition to this, they are a lot easier to sort out, and you will have paid for the entire trip before you leave. Certainly, when you are shopping for holidays last-minute it is important to find something that is already sorted out for you.

One of the problems about all-inclusive holidays is simply the fact that they can often be very poor quality unless you have done your homework. People often turn up at the resort only to find that the service is all for all the food is disgusting. When this occurs, they will often spend a great deal of time away from the resort, racking up additional costs. Given that you have already paid to the holiday info, this is a total waste of money.

It is, therefore, important that you always conduct reviews of any hotel or resort that is included within your last-minute holiday package. As mentioned, these package deals can be hit or miss and therefore it is important to find out what other people have thought of the destination. Only once you’ve done this, and once you have found something suitable, should you book up the trip.

Hurghada Red Sea Holidays

Hurghada was once a small resort by the red sea. But has grown in size and popularity over the past few years. Its climate remains perfect all the year round, so there is no such thing as a bad time to come.

It has a total population of just under two hundred thousand, with many being employed in the tourist industry. Others have found employment in the local fishing industry, as well as in mining and construction. It also has quite a large European community as many have come but not all want to go back.

There is a massive range of available accommodations in Hurghada, ranging from the basic to the top of the range luxury. Whatever you want Hurghada has it to offer. The majority of hotels are in the Promenade road or Village road area, or in the Sheraton road area. The local are is called El Dahar, but there are some nice places to stay here as well. It is worth a look round to see the local culture as the local food markets and bazaars can be found here.

A lot of people pick Hurghada for a holiday as it is right on the Red Sea. There is a large range of activities that can be tried out in the clear and very warm waters of this resort. You could try deep sea fishing, windsurfing, or sailing. But most will come to see the fish and coral reefs. It offers some of the best opportunities in the world for diving and snorkeling.

The underseas world here is very pretty and includes a large variety of fish, some of whom are rare, as well as pristine coral reefs. Most people will chose to get up close to the fish by trying diving or snorkeling form one of the many available tours. If you do not want to actually get into the water then you could go on a glass bottomed boat trip.

Egypt is one of the top spots for history, as it has one of the most ancient civilizations in the world. Cairo offers the ideal way to experience some of these sights and is worthy of one or two days of your time. This ancient city is the capital of Egypt, as well as being the largest city in the whole of Africa. It offers a chance to experience a culture that may be very different from your own. You just have to see the pyramids and the Sphinx, and pay a visit to Cairo museum. It is also a good place for souvenir shopping.

Another top destination is Luxor. This is famous for its position right on the River Nile, and for being home to the Valley of the Kings. This was once the capital of Egypt. A must see are the temples of Karnak which are amazingly well preserved.

Cheap Holiday Deals To Morocco

When you think of Morocco, you think of glistening mosques, chanting imams, rich scents of spices in the air. You dream of tiled mosaics, fine silver and gold jewellery and food that smells floral and fruity and spicy all at once. Here are some tips to finding cheap holidays and cheap holiday deals to Morocco.

Morocco is a country situated along the Northern Coast of Africa along the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Home to more than thirty two million people, this nation is one of few nations in the world which runs under a constitutional monarchy with an elected parliament.

While staying in Morocco, you can choose from a number of different regions to stay in. Essaouira is a favorite region for many to holiday at. It has a lot to offer those who love to wander the beaches. There, visitors can enjoy the splendid surroundings and incredible service at some of the local hotels such as the Ryad Lyon-Mogador or the Riad Malaika. Ouarzazate is another area that is popular as is Fes.

If you are looking for adventure, Morocco has plenty for you to experience. Essaouira offers several options that can make your visit to Morocco a memorable one. How about starting your day with a drive over the dunes in a landrover? Make a stop at a Berber farmhouse and experience the food and culture of the people there. Take a flight in a hot air balloon. Sway through the dunes on the back of a camel. Or a simple horse back ride along the beach.

When in Fes, take a trip to the Fez Mullah cemetery and to the rest of the Jewish quarter which was largely vacated in the nineteen sixties. There, you can also see the synagogue. While in Fes, visitors can enjoy a walk through a fourteenth century school, the Bou Inania Medersa. This six century old building is still, amazingly enough, in use as both a school and a place of worship.

Morocco is a shopper’s paradise. The variety of things for sale at the souk (market) is hard to describe, no matter which city or town you may visit. While shopping for clothing, you may find yourself being entertained by dancers and musicians in the market square. Acrobats or storytellers may command your attention while you haggle for the best prices on jewellery or leather. At night, you will find all sorts of open air restaurants in the square.

The food in Morocco is influenced by many cultures. The Moors and Spanish people have left their mark upon the cuisine of Morocco, as have the Berbers, the Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and African peoples. Because of these many influences, much of Moroccan cuisine is rich in spices and flavours. Some of the favorite spices for cooking involve mint or saffron. Lemons or oranges make appearances in many foods as well. Most meals in Morocco are served with some couscous as either a side dish or accompanying the main course which often includes either chicken or beef, and occasionally lamb.

When in Morocco, be prepared for the typical Mediterranean climate. At times it can be very hot and humid, at times very cool and dry. The climate provides for great biodiversity – indeed, Morocco is home to more than 470 bird species. There is always something wonderful for you to find right around the corner while on holiday in Morocco.
