Kruger National Park Safari

Every big city has a zoo that is always full of people – especially during the summer! But if you want to see ‘real’ wild animals, it’s a disappointment. In the ends, it’s just a zoo. Most people wish to see wildlife living in their natural environment: Lions running after impala, hippos lazing in the water not to mention vultures circling the sky looking for pray. A safari on the African continent is something you will never forget!

The Kruger Park in South Africa is probably one of the most popular game reserves in Africa where the Big 5 (elephants, leopards, lions, rhinos and buffalo) can be seen.

These animals were given this name not because of a clever marketing stunt to attract visitors but because these were the most difficult animals to hunt. Every professional hunter had to shoot these animals in order to test his skills. Nowadays hunting of these animals is forbidden by law.

When visiting the Kruger National Park, you will probably arrive at the Johannesburg airport. At the arrivals terminal you can book your rental car and then drive straight to the Kruger Park. This should take you around 2 – 3 hours. You do not need a 4×4 vehicle has the Kruger Park has a good road structure. Only on certain paths you will need a 4-wheel drive. But these are far and few between.

You will also find many types Kruger National Park accommodation. Of course, if you wish to stay inside the game reserve, you will have to pay a bit extra. You will find accommodation for every budget.

Simple camps are located inside the park but you will also find luxurious lodges where all your needs are catered for. Hotels, lodges and guest-houses can also be found on the borders of the Kruger Park. Accommodation inside the game reserve is more convenient as you have the Kruger Park right at your door-step.

If you chose accommodation outside the park, you will need to calculate in time for the drive towards the gates which can sometimes take 30 – 60 minutes. Many lodges and hotels offer guided tours at the Kruger Park. The local guides are all connected to a radio network so they will always know where some of the animals are located. The guides will also inform you of interesting facts about the animals and flora. You can also take your own car and do a self-drive safari. That way you can decide for yourself how long you wish to stay at a waterhole and which paths to take.

But you do not need to go all the way to the Kruger National Park to go on safari. The most popular tourist destination in South Africa is Cape Town. Even here – just 2 hours outside the city – you will find a safari game reserve. The predators are behind large enclosed fences just like a zoo but the other wildlife animals are running around freely just like you would find in the Kruger Park.
