Gems Of Cape Town

While travelling in around Cape Town, there are a few attractions that everyone has to have experienced. This includes hiking up to Table Mountain, viewing the Cape of Good Hope, taking a boat ride to Robben Island and walking through the V&A Waterfront at the Cape Town harbour. All of these attractions can be seen when going on one of the many Cape Town tours that are being offered by tour operators. But there are a few hidden gems in Cape Town that you will not see on a tour and only a few tourists will ever discover these – such as the West Coast National Park.

This national park can be found 120km outside of Cape Town driving on the National Rd 27. This is one of the few national parks in this area and was only declared one in 1985 to preserve the plants and animals who live here. The West Coast National Park covers the area between Yzerfontein up until Langebaan. 256 different species of birds can be found here – some of which are endangered. As a skilled bird-watcher, you can test your skills and see whether you can spot and name these birds. During the European winter, birds come here to escape the harsh weather, breed and nest. Even flamingos (and penguins) can be found here near the water. You can also book a boat trip to some of the small islands located off the coast. Here you will see even more birds breeding and nesting. Don’t forget your binoculars and your camera!

In addition to the West Coast National Park, you will also find several game parks near Cape Town where you can have a Cape Town safari. Normally, you will be able to arrive here with your own car and do a self-drive safari or you can book one of their tours where a guide will drive you around the park and tell you everything you need to know about the flora and fauna in this area. The game parks also have accommodation possibilities so that you can spend several days exploring the area.

But game parks near Cape Town are no substitute for proper Kruger National Park Tours. At the Kruger National Park near Johannesburg you will see thousands of wild animals living in their natural habitat. Most game parks near Cape Town also do not have the Big 5 and if they do, the predators are behind enclosed fences resembling a zoo rather than a wild life park. This is not the case at the Kruger National Park. This is their home, you are the visitor!
